Birds of Danube

Dam Hrusovska zdrz (part of Gabcikovo dam) is a water area on the Danube River on the south-eastern outskirts of Bratislava.

It is one of the most important wintering areas for many aquatic birds in Central Europe. Its’ main inhabitants in winter times are many species of ducks (like tufted ducks or goldeyes), usually spending their winter time here in huge numbers (sometimes more than 100 000 birds). Sometimes, birders observe some uncommon visitors, even a rare pelican. Apart from wintering aquatic birds, this area is home to our biggest raptor – white-tailed eagle. With wingspan often exceeding 2 metres, the white-tailed eagle is surely the undisputed king of skies above the Danube.
