Winter hike

Vápenná (753 m asl) is one of the most interesting hills in Small Carpathians, the third highest in this mountain range. Beautiful nature sceneries and the regular high snow depth make this trip an unrepeatable experience. Herds of moufflons (Ovis musimon) are pretty common sight in the vicinity of Vápenná steep slopes in winter period. They are typical for the carst parts of the Small Carpathians. Top of Vápenná hill offers one of the most beautiful views of the Small Carpathians mountain range. Birds watching will be also part of this journey. We will try to locate several birds that stay there for the winter. For instance Common Raven (Corvus corax) or Long-tailed Tit (Aegithalos caudatus).

Meeting place: 11:20 am at the bus stop Plavecké Podhradie – Pošta (Post office)

Walk length: 4 hours (11:30 am – 3:30 pm)

Route: moderate (according to snow depth), terrain hilly, route long approximately 10 km

End of the walk: Plavecké Podhradie

Participants fee optional. We provide binoculars and bird identification guide to the participants.

In case of bad weather we will keep you posted about the possible cancellation of the observation both on our website and our Facebook page in the evening before the observation. The observation is automatically cancelled in case the Slovak hydrometeorological institute issues a warning for that day. New date will be posted shortly afterwards.

The hike will get rescheduled in case of no or insufficient snow cover.
