Wintering waterbirds at Danube

Hrušovská zdrž water reservoir on Danube is the most important site for wintering waterbirds in Slovakia. Thousands of Tufted Ducks, Goldeneyes and other duck species arrive in winter every year. We will have an opportunity to spot numerous Great and Pygmy Cormorants. Beside few breeding pairs many more White-tailed Eagles from Northern Europe winter here as well. Large water body attract also unusual and much rarer winter guests as Greater Scaup, Velvet Scoter or Long-tailed Duck. Don’t forget warm clothes, tea and your binoculars and come with us to explore this winter bird paradise.

Meeting place and time: 8:10 at the #91 bus stop under Most SNP Bridge, or 9:00 at the bus stop Areál Vodných Športov near Čunovo. Individual arrival by car is possible as well. You may park your car next to the “Modrá Čajka” harbor.

Walk length: 4 hours (9:00 – 13:00)

Route: an easy trek, approximately 5 km, terrain is flat

End of the walk: Čunovo, bus stop MiÚ Čunovo; participants that arrived by car may leave us earlier and walk back to the parking place

Participants fee optional. We provide binoculars, bird identification guide and a spotting scope to the participants.
